Doug Land: The Hedlund, 2024, digital sketch

Doug Land:
The Hedlund

Interactive Installation

Five tall, eye-catching columns stand on large wooden bases, each holding bamboo branches that gently sway when spun. These aren’t just ordinary sculptures; they’re interactive pieces inviting you to play, encouraging reflection on growth, change, and letting go. The Hedlund (2024) is the second iteration of a sculpture symbolizing the five members of Doug Land’s maternal family, with each column representing a pillar of memory and shared history. The movement of the columns mirrored the dynamic, sometimes chaotic nature of familial relationships—swaying, yet always returning to a point of rest. However, as Land remade the work to fit the context of a new space, the symbolic meaning of the columns shifted, allowing for new interpretations that reflect the artist’s own growth and changing perspectives.

Bio

Doug Land's upbringing in the wooded hills of Cedar Hill, south of Dallas, instilled in him a deep appreciation for the natural world, which he has channeled into his artistic practice. He first honed his skills at the Savannah College of Art and Design, earning a BFA before going on to attain an MFA from Texas Christian University. From a young age, Land developed a passion for gardening, which he enjoyed practicing alongside his grandmother. As greenspaces have become increasingly scarce, he has sought to cultivate an artistic vision in dialogue with the outdoor experience. His work focuses on finding a middle ground between growth and decay. Land works extensively with living plants, natural materials, and sustainable practices in his creative process. By sharing his experiences with nature, he hopes to inspire others to develop their own connection to the environment around them. His artistic output represents a compelling intersection of environmental stewardship and aesthetic expression.
