Memory in Migration: Butterfly CUSTOMIZATION Workshop
TIME: Saturday, August 1st, 1–3 pm
PLACE: Bachman Branch Library, Black Box Theater
INSTRUCTOR: Karla Ramirez-Santin
REGISTER HERE TO PARTICIPATE
In this free bilingual (English & Spanish) workshop, participants will create unique artworks using paper butterflies, collage, image transfers, and colorful markers, drawing inspiration from personal memories, family, culture, or places that have shaped their lives. No art experience is necessary, and all supplies are provided.
Karla will begin by sharing her artistic practice and guiding you through creative writing and art-making. At the end of the workshop, you may take your butterfly home or donate it to Karla for a future community art installation.
After the workshop, stay for a special Art Quest mini scavenger hunt throughout the library. Performers from Teatro Dallas will guide you through interactive clues to discover 10 hidden prints of Karla's artwork.
As a special thank-you for participating, each participant will also receive a complimentary ticket to Meow Wolf Grapevine.
Limited to 20 participants. Open to ages 16 and up.
Karla Ramirez-Santin
Karla Ramirez-Santin is a multimedia artist and educator born in Toluca, Mexico, who immigrated to the United States with her family as a child. She received her MFA from Texas Woman’s University, where she has taught and continues to teach drawing and painting courses. She also serves as a Lab Specialist at Dallas College–Brookhaven Campus and is a member of The Cedars Union’s Cohort V.
Ramirez-Santin’s practice incorporates a range of media, mementos, and found objects to explore themes of grief, immigration, memory, and the deeply personal intersections of these experiences. Collaboration is central to her practice. Through intimate conversations and shared experiences, she seeks to create space for voices that are often silenced or spoken for.

En este taller gratuito y bilingüe (inglés y español), los participantes crearán obras de arte únicas utilizando mariposas de papel, collage, transferencias de imágenes y marcadores de colores, inspirándose en recuerdos personales, la familia, la cultura o los lugares que han marcado sus vidas. No se requiere experiencia artística y todos los materiales están incluidos.
Karla comenzará compartiendo su práctica artística y los guiará a través de actividades de escritura creativa y creación artística. Al finalizar el taller, podrán llevarse su mariposa a casa o donarla a Karla para formar parte de una futura instalación artística comunitaria.
Después del taller, acompáñanos en una búsqueda del tesoro artística (Art Quest) por toda la biblioteca. Integrantes de Teatro Dallas los guiarán a través de pistas interactivas para descubrir 10 impresiones ocultas de las obras de Karla.
Como agradecimiento por participar, cada participante recibirá también un boleto gratuito para Meow Wolf Grapevine.

Karla Ramirez-Santin es una artista multimedia y educadora nacida en Toluca, México, que emigró a los Estados Unidos con su familia durante su infancia. Recibió su Maestría en Bellas Artes (MFA) de Texas Woman’s University, donde ha impartido y continúa impartiendo cursos de dibujo y pintura. También se desempeña como especialista de laboratorio en el campus Brookhaven de Dallas College y es miembro de la Cohorte V de Cedars Union.
La práctica de Ramirez-Santin incorpora una variedad de medios, recuerdos y objetos encontrados para explorar temas como el duelo, la inmigración, la memoria y las intersecciones profundamente personales de estas experiencias. La colaboración es un elemento central de su práctica.
