Tina Medina’s Pandemic Pachanga (Aura) (2024) is a performance/video portraying the claustrophobic and uncertain atmosphere of the Covid-19 pandemic. During this period, as a mother, Medina felt obligated to maintain a positive, clean, and enriching home for her children, which became overwhelmingly difficult to achieve. The burden of isolation on her family tested their strength, turning life into a crazy dance that continues to this day. Her bodily movements symbolize both the chaos of life and the energy of a rowdy party, or “Pachanga.” Her artwork stands as a small testimony and a broader truth about motherhood.

Tina Medina is an artist, educator, and curator living in Dallas, Texas. Since 2006, she has been serving as a full-time professor of art at Dallas College. In 2021, she co-founded Nuestra Artist Collective. Through an exploration of fibers, painting, video, and audio, Medina’s art reflects on the history of United States from the point of view of underrepresented voices in our communities, such as people of color, farmworkers, the undocumented, and women and children.
